Sussex Pensioner Warns Homeowners After Nightmare Building Dispute

A Sussex pensioner is warning other homeowners to vet contractors with extreme care after a devastating dispute with a rogue builder left his home uninhabitable for two years.

For 84-year-old Mr. Daly, the ordeal began when a contractor removed the tiles from his roof and failed to secure it against the elements. The resulting severe water ingress caused extensive damage to the upper floor of his property, forcing him to sleep in an armchair downstairs in his living room for two years.

Mr. Daly believed he had taken the correct precautions by seeking quotes from eight different companies. He ultimately selected a firm whose branding was highly visible in the area where he lives – and which offered the most competitive price.

Crucially, Mr. Daly assumed the company was reputable because its marketing displayed accreditations from official bodies, including the Confederation of Roofing Contractors and Checkatrade. It was later discovered that the company was using these logos without authorisation and was not a member.

Despite subsequently winning a civil court judgment to recover more than £50,000, Mr. Daly is still facing a battle to claw back the funds he paid out.

Desperate to resolve the situation, Mr. Daly sought advice from James Parker of Ninfield-based building firm Parker & Son. James stepped in to project-manage the recovery, bringing in his team, a professional roofing company and a dedicated team of decorators to restore the property.

Mr. Daly said: “James has been brilliant. He has overseen the entire restoration of the house. I wanted to keep the property as close to its 1936 heritage as possible and James’s team helped me do just that. The painting and tiling are outstanding.”

James Parker, whose family-run firm has a history spanning back to 1929 and specialises in heritage renovations, said the case highlights the dangers of rogue traders.

“It is deeply shocking to see a vulnerable 84-year-old homeowner taken advantage of in this manner,” James said. “The contractor left the roof completely exposed, causing catastrophic damage to a beautiful home while the work they did manage to complete was incredibly shoddy.

“We were privileged to help Mr. Daly restore his home, but we urge anyone looking to commission building work to be extremely cautious. Never rely solely on the lowest quote. Always ask to speak with previous customers and, if you are planning extensive renovations, ask to visit a property the company has previously worked on to verify their standards.”
